Hiljadu devetsto osamdeset četvrta, skraćeno nazivan „1984“,je antiutopijski roman britanskog književnika Džordža Orvela. Roman govori o životu naizgled beznačajnog pojedinca Vinstona Smita koji u jednom ministarstvu totalitarne države Okeanije radi na lažiranju istorijskih činjenica. Smit postaje nezadovoljan svojim ništavnim životom, te vremenom postaje protivnik takvog sistema i na kraju bude uhapšen, mučen i prevaspitan. Roman opisuje ekstremno totalitarno društvo i pojedinca u životu nadziranom 24 časa svakodnevno. Tematika je neposredno povezana sa staljinističkim režimom i kultom ličnosti, zbog čega je roman smatran potencijalno politički opasnim, pa je u pojedinim zemljama bio zabranjen.„Veliki brat te posmatra“ je poznati izraz iz tog dela, koji aludira na vladin nadzor svakog pojedinca i koji je preuzet u televizijskoj emisiji Big Brother.
Časopis Tajm je 2005. godine svrstao ovaj roman u 100 najboljih romana na engleskom jeziku.
